2017 Presents Optimal Lawn Seeding Conditions

Bedford Hills, NY – September 18, 2018 – Lawn professionals are frequently asked “when is the best time to seed a lawn?”  While many think that spring would seem an ideal time, the fact is that early autumn is the optimal season for seeding—and this year the conditions couldn’t be better for seed to germinate quickly.  In 2017, the weather is cooperating with moderate temperatures and steady rainfall providing the adequate moisture and conditions to root growth. After the last couple years of dry and drought conditions in many areas, now is the perfect time for homeowners and property managers to help their lawns finish strong and build a green, thicker lawn by the end of October.

Matt Lindner Director of Lawn Care for SavATree, comments, “With the combination of consistent weather and appropriate seed selections for sun and shade areas, we should see great results in lawn rejuvenation this fall.  But time is running out –consumers should seed now before the first frost.”

Use Slice Seeding to Fill Out a Thin Lawn
Slice seeding is an ideal technique for repairing a damaged lawn, improving a thin or weak lawn or introducing more resistant grass types that are adapted to the various conditions of a property. This efficient method uses steel blades to cut furrows into the soil then plant seeds directly into the furrows. Slice seeding puts seeds in direct contact with the soil as opposed to merely spreading them onto a lawn where many of them will not germinate. Slice seeding is a great way to transform a thin lawn into a lush, green carpet.

Combine Core Aeration with Overseeding
Core aeration is the process of mechanically removing plugs of soil and thatch from a lawn. Overseeding uses a spreader to distribute seeds over an entire lawn. Combining core aeration with overseeding is a great way to introduce better grass varieties into a lawn, reduce soil compaction, minimize thatch buildup and build a greener, healthier lawn.

Consider Fall Fertilization
Another key element of fall lawn care is fertilization. By fertilizing a lawn this fall, one makes an investment in the lawn’s root system that will reap considerable returns. An application of lawn fertilizer scheduled evenly between September and November will provide a lawn with the nutrients that it needs to develop a deep, strong root system. This will enhance a lawn’s ability to draw water from the soil so that it survives the winter and provides a head start towards a lush, green lawn next spring.
